Forward columnist Jay Michaelson, recently included in the Forward Fifty list of the year’s most influential Jewish leaders, was so honored for contributions on three separate fronts in 2009. His new book, and the subject of his talk, “is the first serious theological attempt to codify what is – or could be – Jewish about the broader spiritual movement referred to as JuBu.” The Forward goes on to note that an article Michaelson wrote about his love for Israel and his growing discomfort defending Israel from attacks from the left touched a nerve, engendering a firestorm storm of controversy and healthy discussion. Finally, his noted accomplishments include the success of Nehirim, the Jewish spiritual GLBT organization he founded in 2004.
