Is the Holocaust a suitable subject for humor? Based on “Life is Beautiful?” No. Based on “The Producers?” Yes. What about Hogan’s Heroes? The Great Dictator? This question of taste, of where the line between humor and horror lies, is not new to the Holocaust. Gallows humor is but one example of laughing in the face of death and despair. Director Ferne Pearlstein interviews today’s top comics to tackle the slippery slope of offensiveness. She also employs archival footage to make sociological points, and even turns to a survivor for perspective. The clips include newly discovered footage of Jerry Lewis’ never-released film Holocaust comedy “The Day the Clown Cried,” and rare footage of cabarets inside the concentration camps themselves. The resulting mixture of comic and historic material is win-win. This is a seriously funny film that will make you laugh. It is also a serious examination of humor, which explores what makes us laugh and why.
