Recovery after the Holocaust required luck, tenacity and a will to live. Hungarian survivor Miklos has been sent to Sweden to recuperate in a sanitarium, where he is informed he has 6 months to live. A stubborn man, Miklos finds the names of 117 Hungarian women also in Swedish hospitals, and writes to every one, finally falling in love via the mail and a secret meeting with 19-year-old Lili. The romance unfolds with tender beauty as director Peter Gardos depicts the circumstances of his parents’ courtship and his own birth. Filmed in stark yet sumptuous black and white, “Fever at Dawn” has the high gloss of memory, and we seem to view the events of 1945 through time. Bittersweet as rendezvous impossible love story must be, this life-affirming Hungarian gem captures - in one man’s will to live - the essence of survival
