Who makes the best hummus? Who invented hummus? How did hummus become a superfood? Could hummus be the secret ingredient in the recipe for peace in the Middle East? Does hummus cure mental illness?  Director Oren Rosenfeld is not the first to suggest that this simple staple binds cultures, evident from the film’s tagline: “It unites. It divides. It’s delicious.” Hummus, it turns out, is also as fascinating as the people who make it, the passionate Jewish Israelis, Muslims and Christians who have dedicated their lives in the same pursuit, worshipping at the same altar. The humble and ubiquitous hummus, dare we say it, is an almost sacred source of nourishment to these eclectic and eccentric cooks. With hummus, we get a tale of tradition, respect, good health. We also get a story of modernity, with conflicts to resolve, economic challenges, and the evolution of a radical new food movement. Naturally, Israel finds itself in the epicenter of this explosion of interest in food as a social statement and a set of ethical values,  as well as a source of health and pleasure.
