SKYPE In with Sonia Warshawski

Heroes come in many shapes, sizes and ages. Blessed with a huge heart, copious energy, and enormous dedication to the memory of the Holocaust, Sonia is Tikkun Olam with a purse. She’s a force of nature and a delight - warm and kind, and strong as steel. Her amazing story of survival in the camps and the cheerful defiance with which she has lived her life are thankfully recorded for posterity by those closest to her, including her filmmaker granddaughter Leah Warshawski. Of the many inspirational films in the festival, Big Sonia tops them all with just one scene set in a prison she visits. “If I made it, you can too,” she encourages a prisoner after describing being badly beaten in Auschwitz. She gives him faith for a moment, and leaves us deeply gratified by her determination to repair the world by sharing her story.
