James Caan stars as a cantankerous American cardiologist who retires to Israel to raise pigs—and a little hell—in French writer-director Amanda Sthers’ humorous, warm-hearted look at the secular/ religious divide. The stubborn old man is already estranged from his son (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his ex-wife (Rosanna Arquette), and soon locks horns with the local rabbi (Tom Hollander). What, exactly, is old age supposed to be about? As it so often turns out, a time for amends and reconciliation. Strong performances and its Israeli setting bring new life to French director Amanda Sthers’ story of healing, understanding, and life’s last chapters.
