Israel's Hidden Change Makers with Nelly Ben Tal

At a time when the news often focuses on challenges and conflict, this program invites us to discover another Israel -one powered by grassroots initiatives, social movements, and NGOs quietly (and sometimes loudly) building a better future.
These hidden changemakers, often missing from mainstream stories, embody resilience, coexistence, and creativity. Two years after the dark day of Simchat Torah, their stories remind us that renewal is not only possible - it is already happening. Through their inspiring examples, we’ll explore how ordinary people across Israel are driving extraordinary change and lighting the path toward a more compassionate, innovative, and hopeful society. Through these initiatives and leaders, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of Israeli society, uncovering insights and data that reveal the trends, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges shaping the modern State of Israel today.

About Nelly Ben Tal

Nelly Ben Tal is the Senior Israel Emissary (Shlicha) for JEWISHcolorado and The Jewish Agency for Israel. She comes from Ramat HaNegev, Colorado’s sister community, and moved to Denver with her family in August 2023. With over 15 years of experience in community building, Israeli culture, and organizational consulting, Nelly brings a deep understanding of Israel’s social and innovation sectors. She previously served as Community & Culture Manager at the Ramat HaNegev Council and founded Meshutaf, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young families and women in the Negev.

Shaped by her upbringing in Israel, IDF service, and academic studies at Ben Gurion and the Open University, Nelly is passionate about connecting people to Israel’s diverse voices and stories. She enjoys baking, hiking, and exploring Colorado’s outdoors with her husband Rotem and their three children.

Stop by Café at the J to grab a coffee before joining Nelly in conversation about the latest news from Israel. In this program, Nelly will address current events in Israel and answer any questions you may have about what is happening in the country. This is a space for respectful dialogue and thoughtful inquiry.
