Is Alfred E. Neuman Jewish? The fictitious mascot and cover boy of Mad Magazine for more than 60 years might be a member of the tribe, but there’s no debate about the Jewish identity of his creators. Publisher William Gaines (the son of famed comics publisher Max Gaines, born Maxwell Ginsberg), editor Harvey Kurtzman, and cartoonists Willie Elder and Al Jaffe, all contributed to the magazine’s distinctly Jewish take on modern life. Learn why generations of teens have grown older if not wiser reading Mad Magazine, a triumph of American chutzpah.
