This course explores the elements of storytelling in orchestral music by studying techniques that composers employ to express key aspects of narrative. These include characters, setting, and plot. Attendees will hear and examine samples from several eras and composers, chosen to reflect fascinating uses of orchestral sounds and concepts.

Michael Butterman is the Music Director of four orchestras: Boulder Philharmonic, and the Shreveport, Lancaster, and Williamsburg Symphony orchestras. A sought-after guest conductor, acclaimed for creative artistry and innovative programming, he has led the Boulder Phil to national prominence, including its appearance at the Kennedy Center’s inaugural SHIFT Festival of American Orchestras.

Renee Gilliland is Associate Director of Orchestras, Conductor of the CU Philharmonic Orchestra, and instructor of music education at the University of Colorado-Boulder, College of Music. Concurrently, she is Assistant Conductor of the Boulder Philharmonic.

Dr. Fernanda Nieto is the Director of Education and Community Engagement with the Boulder Philharmonic. Nieto was born in Mendoza, Argentina, where she received her undergraduate degree in Piano Performance. She completed her Master’s in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ohio University and her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at CU-Boulder.
