Instructor: Dr. Susan Trout
Here in 2026, gender remains a controversial topic. What defines a male? What defines a female? What about people who don’t fit into either of these two possibilities? Does gender identity relate to sexual orientation? Now is the time to learn about what constitutes gender identity and what, if anything, it has to do with sexual orientation. Dr. Susan Trout lays out the crucial information needed for the current conversations on this subject. She provides the basics about sex chromosomes and how the internal and external reproductive systems are formed in a fetus. She explains medical conditions that can cause the chromosomes to predict one gender when the appearance of the genitalia shows a different gender. Dr. Trout discusses why terms such as “biological gender” or “gender at birth” are inaccurate and explains what we know about how a child develops a gender identity. She shares research on what happens when that identity differs from one’s appearance. Questions and discussions at the end of her lecture are welcome.
