What does security mean, and who gets to define it? This timely lecture introduces the United Nations’ global Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, beginning with the landmark Security Council Resolution 1325 and the WPS Act of 2017. Women remain dramatically under-represented in many decision-making arenas, yet women around the world have long understood that security is not simply about military strength but also includes human well-being, environmental stability, effective health programs, and economic opportunity. Cynda Collins Arsenault explains how countries are implementing national action plans, why the gap persists, and what can be done about it. She reveals the challenges and practical steps toward a more inclusive and effective vision of security.
