Instructor: Jon Levy
Louis D. Brandeis is best remembered as the first Jewish person to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Less appreciated is that he is arguably the most influential legal thinker of the twentieth century and is responsible for our modern understanding of the individual rights to liberty, privacy, and free speech. Prior to joining the Supreme Court in 1916, Brandeis was perhaps the most well-known lawyer in America, having been characterized by the press as “The People’s Lawyer”. He spearheaded the great American legal tradition of pro bono representation and was a central figure in the enactment of state and federal laws protecting workers’ rights. As the child of Jewish immigrants, Brandeis led the American Zionist movement, ultimately persuading President Woodrow Wilson to support the adoption of the Balfour Declaration, leading to the creation of the State of Israel. In his talk, Jon Levy argues that Louis Brandeis is one of the most consequential judges and lawyers in American legal history.
About the instructor:
Jon Levy recently retired as a United States District Court Judge. Prior to his confirmation as a federal judge, he served as an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Court and as a Maine trial judge. During his judicial career, Jon developed an interest in Louis Brandeis’ life and jurisprudence, which led him to speak before a variety of audiences ranging from Judicial and Bar Associations to college and high school students. In 2016, he had the privilege of speaking at Brandeis University as part of the University’s centennial celebration of Brandeis’ confirmation as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
