Instructor: Joel B. Smith and Guest lecturer Dr. Joe Casola
On World Environment Day 2024, the United Nations declared Climate Change as the defining global issue of our time and issued a warning that we are at a crucial moment. Shifting weather patterns threaten food production. Rising sea levels increase the risk of catastrophic flooding. The impacts are both global in scope and unprecedented in scale.
This three-session class will cover an overview and the impacts of the science of Climate Change, recent trends in greenhouse gas emissions, and the status of mitigation (emissions control) and adaptation (resilience) The first half of the class is a lecture, followed by Q&A and group discussions. We address the following questions, among others:
- How is humanity changing the climate and what impact is this having?
- What options are there for local municipalities, the state, and the private sector to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions? Are we making progress?
- What options are there for developing realistic approaches to adapt to Climate Change?
Joel B. Smith has been analyzing and consulting on climate change’s impacts and adaptation issues for three decades. He has written and edited many books and articles on the topic. Smith authored international and national assessments including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and U.S. National Assessments. Smith provided training on Climate Change around the world.
Dr. Joe Casola works at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he serves as the Regional Climate Services Director for the West.
