Exchange Summer Lecture Series: The Composers that History Forgot
The Artistic Director of Boulder's beloved Colorado MahlerFest presents a talk about the brilliant generation of 20th century Jewish composers who were inspired by the example of Gustav Mahler. Their music helped reshape the world, but for most of them, their lives were profoundly altered by the events surrounding WWII, and the music by many of these incredible musicians has been largely lost or forgotten for generations. Among the clips Woods plays is from the talented Viktor Ullman’s Opera, ‘The King of the Atlantic.’ This work was saved, despite his tragic death in Auschwitz.
Lecturer: Director, Kenneth Woods
Artistic Director and Conductor of Colorado MahlerFest, Woods is also an author and cultural commentator. He appears regularly on the BBC, All Things Considered, Gramophone Magazine, the Washington Post and other outlets discussing music and society. He is a leading expert in the music of 20th century composers whose music was suppressed or banned by the Nazis. MahlerFest is a world leader in bringing lost music back to public awareness.
