 The Precious Minerals Challenge for Renewable Energy

One obstacle to more renewable energy production involves the critical minerals used in the production of solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and batteries. A substantial portion of these minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper, will come from new and expanded mining operations around the world. This is a major concern, due to previous neglect of the communities involved and the environmental impact. Professor Squillace considers how nations can responsibly identify, source, and process these minerals and deploy them in renewable energy products. Policy issues include the geopolitics of precious minerals, the emerging commitment of private companies to environmental, social, and governance standards, and the federal government’s role in authorizing mining operations, especially on public lands.

Lecturer: Professor Mark Squillace

Squillace is the Raphael J. Moses Professor of Natural Resources Law at the University of Colorado Law School. He also served as the Director of Colorado Law’s Natural Resources Law Center from 2005-2013. Before joining the Colorado law faculty, Professor Squillace taught law at the University of Toledo and at the University of Wyoming. He is a former Fulbright scholar and the author and co-author of numerous articles and books on natural resources, environmental law and policy, water resources law, and public lands. In 2000, he served as Special Assistant to the Solicitor at the U.S. Department of the Interior and worked directly with Secretary of the Interior on a wide range of legal and policy issues.
