Discovering Bhutan: Land of Gross National Happiness

Learn about the tiny remote kingdom of Bhutan, which recently stepped onto the world stage as a result of its influential holistic development philosophy, Gross National Happiness, and remarkable environmental policies. In this introductory lecture, we look at the country’s history, its spectacular landscape, and rich culture, including its religion. Current issues there, including changing attitudes toward gender and age, will also be addressed. Numerous accompanying PowerPoint slides use photos to vividly illustrate the topics covered.

Lecturer: Dr. Janet Ward Schofield

A prize-winning teacher and researcher with an AB, MA and PhD from Harvard University, Dr Schofield was a social psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh before helping to establish and develop Bhutan’s first private college from 2009-2019. Her research has been featured in the US, Europe and Bhutan, and has given talks on five continents. Her new book, Discovering Bhutan, describes Bhutan’s rich environment, culture, and the adventures she and her husband had as two of the half dozen Americans ever allowed to live and work in Bhutan for more than a decade.
