Ignited by an impromptu visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany, Nick Del Calzo spent the next five years creating 145 portraits of Holocaust survivors in 12 states. Some 72 portraits are included in The Triumphant Spirit, which received a glowing tribute in the Congressional Record and was selected by the American Library Association as one of the “Best Books for Young Adults.”
Beginning in 2010, the Feiner Family Foundation republished The Triumphant Spirit, sending 2,000 complimentary copies to Holocaust museums, educators, organizations, and Jewish leaders. This is the first time in over a decade that this historical book has been widely available.
The Triumphant Spirit exhibition signifies the lasting legacy of Holocaust survivors who arrived in America, forged new lives, raised families, and established prosperous businesses. Throughout the years, these survivors have transformed into symbols of hope, serving as a shining light for those confronting overwhelming challenges and for all of humanity. Today, their portraits and narratives stand as reminders of humanity’s inhumanity—an atrocity in history that must always be remembered.
The Triumphant Spirit exhibition is now available for display as a permanent gift and has been donated to an important museum. Based on previous museum exhibitions nationwide, the Triumphant Spirit will make a compelling educational experience. This historical body of work will also be seen as documents of war and uplifting, living testimonials from a group of unique Jews who overcame astonishing odds to survive. These rare portraits and stories will undoubtedly ignite the human spirit of all ages, mainly because they underscore a profound victory for moral justice.
This groundbreaking work was showcased in the award-winning book The Triumphant Spirit. The prestigious United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., noted that it is a “powerful collection of portraits.” Join Renee Rockford at the opening reception on Thursday, March 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to hear about her experience writing The Triumphant Spirit and speak about its enduring importance.
