The Power of Repair: How the Boulder JCC is Sparking Change with Sustainable Collaborations

In the face of recent challenges both in Boulder and across the globe, the Jewish community continues to remain resilient and persevere—continuing to support one another, and discover moments of meaning and joy in the rhythms of everyday life. Whether through acts of service, education, or simply gathering in solidarity, the community demonstrates the power of coming together to create something greater than ourselves.

At the heart of this spirit is the Boulder JCC, which has been actively creating opportunities and programs for engagement, growth, and impact. An inspiring example of this is the Boulder JCC’s ongoing partnership with the Boulder U-Fix-It Clinics—an initiative that blends service, environmental responsibility, and community learning. These free, family-friendly events invite people from across the Boulder area to bring in broken household items—ranging from small appliances and electronics to toys, jewelry, and clothing—and sit down with volunteer “fix-it coaches” to learn how to diagnose and repair them. The goal is not just to fix what’s broken, but to empower participants with hands-on skills, reduce unnecessary waste, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-sufficiency and shared responsibility.

Adding another layer of meaning to the project is the involvement of Repair the World, a national Jewish organization dedicated to mobilizing Jews and their communities to pursue social justice through meaningful service. Together with Boulder JCC, they reflect on the Jewish value of tikkun olam—repairing the world. Through acts of care and service, participants not only restore broken objects but also strengthen community bonds, foster intergenerational learning, and create spaces where people can show up for each other in tangible ways.

These partnerships are especially meaningful, not only because of their impact but also because of their uniqueness. The Boulder JCC may be the only Jewish Community Center in the country to host a clinic like this—where sustainability, hands-on learning, and Jewish values come together in such a tangible, community-driven way.
