The Boulder JCC's Messinger Art Gallery is preparing to unveil an extraordinary celebration of contemporary fiber art, featuring the innovative works of three accomplished artists: Camille McMurry, Julie Rothschild, and Sara Goldenberg White. This new exhibition promises to transform the gallery space into a tactile wonderland where traditional textile techniques meet bold, modern artistic vision.
Denver-based fiber artist Camille McMurry brings her signature large-scale wall hangings to the forefront of this exhibition. Working exclusively with hand-dyed merino wool, McMurry's pieces blur the boundaries between textile and sculpture through her masterful combination of weaving, knotting, and felting techniques. Her innovative grid-style loom enables her to weave on both horizontal and vertical planes, creating dynamic compositions that play with positive and negative space in ways that challenge viewers' perceptions of dimensional art.
Julie Rothschild approaches fiber art through the lens of her dance background, conducting what she describes as "an ongoing investigation into the movement of making art." Her practice explores the fundamental elements of time, space, tension, strength, and balance, with improvisation and composition serving as guiding principles inherited from her dance career. Working within and around grid structures, Rothschild's pieces capture the essence of movement frozen in fiber.
Completing this powerful trio, Sara Goldenberg White brings both artistic excellence and educational passion to the exhibition. Known nationwide for her museum and gallery exhibitions, White specializes in handwoven and stitched materials that breathe modern life into traditional fiber techniques. Beyond her fine arts practice, she co-authored "Simple Woven Garments: 20+ Projects to Weave" and dedicates herself to sharing her love of weaving through teaching—a passion she considers one of her greatest joys.
The opening reception offers art enthusiasts the perfect opportunity to immerse themselves in these captivating works while enjoying light refreshments and engaging in meaningful conversations with fellow art lovers. This celebration of creativity and inspiration represents exactly the kind of cultural programming that makes the Boulder JCC a vital community hub.
As the community prepares to welcome this new exhibition, art collectors have a final opportunity to acquire pieces from Artie Sandstone's current "Smile Gallery" exhibition, which will be coming down soon. Those interested in purchasing Sandstone's work can feel good knowing that a percentage of all art sales profits will be donated back to the Boulder JCC, supporting the organization's continued commitment to bringing exceptional cultural programming to the community.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience three distinct yet complementary approaches to fiber art, each offering its own perspective on the intersection of tradition and innovation. The Messinger Gallery's latest exhibition promises to be a night of creativity and inspiration that will resonate long after the evening ends. Join the Boulder JCC for the fiber arts gallery on Thursday, September 18, from 5:30 - 7 pm. Register on the Boulder JCC website.
