Artist Statement
Brian Comber is a fine arts painter and printmaker who creates provocative works in a contemporary style with universal themes. As a painter, Brian began with oils, often on very large canvases with both abstract and figurative themes. After years of painting exclusively in oils, he applied what he had learned to the more demanding medium of watercolor, and as he gained confidence, his canvases began to get larger again. His printwork combines the tactile element of intaglio with cerebral ideas that bring life and passion to the corporeal life envisioned in his work. By exploring the effect of lines on the plate, Brian defines a textured world of complex emotion and thought. Literary, historical, and subconscious sources inspire Brian to use the core emotions essential to basic humanity as a foundation for his work. The atmospheric spirit indicative of his art transcends literal interpretation and should be experienced aesthetically.
